A dumbwaiter or small goods lift is a small, vertical transportation device used for moving goods, supplies, or other objects between different decks of a ship. It’s similar in concept to an elevator but is typically much smaller and has a limited capacity. Dumbwaiters and small goods lifts are commonly found in settings such as pantries and galleys where they serve to efficiently transport items like food, laundry or small packages between decks. The doors are manually operated but in most cases self-closing according to the regulations. The dumbwaiters and small goods lifts provide a convenient and practical solution for streamlining tasks that involve moving objects between different decks of a ship.
